Lumière Obscure: why we pair CBD with mint, verbena and wormwood

Our CBD range pairs hemp with three signature plants. A tour of the legal framework (less than 0.1% THC), aromatic pairings, and realistic expectations for a CBD liqueur.

Lumière Obscure: why we pair CBD with mint, verbena and wormwood

When we started working with industrial hemp in 2022, two things struck us immediately: its very distinctive aromatic profile — herbaceous, slightly buttery, with a green-hay note — and the information vacuum surrounding CBD liqueurs in France. Between overblown marketing and vague suspicion, there was little room for a simple line of thought: what, concretely, is a CBD liqueur?

Three years later, our Lumière Obscure range has three references. Here is how we think about them, and what they don’t claim to do.

It all starts with regulation. The hemp we use is:

  • From certified industrial varieties (Cannabis sativa L., varieties listed in the European catalogue)
  • Dosed at less than 0.1% THC — in line with French legislation in force since the decree of 30 December 2021
  • Rich in CBD (cannabidiol), a non-psychotropic molecule and authorised for commercial use since the Court of Justice of the European Union ruling of 19 November 2020

Our three liqueurs are therefore legally classified as flavoured liqueurs, not as therapeutic products. We claim no medical virtue. They are pleasure spirits that explore a particular aromatic note.

Why three companion plants?

Hemp has a strong profile. Left alone, it dominates. Our three recipes pair it with a signature plant of our house that acts as both dialogue and aromatic counterweight.

Menthe CBD Ortie — herbaceous freshness

Spearmint dominates the nose and the attack. It brings the chlorophyll — that of a fresh mint tea. Nettle, at the heart, slides in a lightly spicy, green, faintly vegetal note. The hemp appears only in the back of the mouth, with that hay note that extends the finish.

Serves best: at 3°C, aperitif or digestif, neat or as a long drink.

Verveine CBD Aurone — verbena augmented

Lemony verbena on the attack — recognised by all our enthusiasts. At the heart, buttered hemp wraps around the verbena, gives it roundness, avoids the dryness a pure verbena liqueur can have. Southernwood (cousin of wormwood, softer) adds a very fine camphorated note on the finish.

Serves best: at 3°C as a digestif, at room temperature for a reflective pause.

CBD Absinthe Citron — for informed enthusiasts

The most assertive of the three. Hemp is dominant — you clearly feel its distinctive note. Wormwood structures the middle with its bitter mint and liquorice. Lemon peel and coriander bring the freshness needed for balance. This liqueur is not consensual: it speaks to hemp enthusiasts seeking the greenest expression of the product.

Serves best: at 3°C as a digestif only. Not a long drink.

FAQ

Does it get you high?

No. CBD is not psychotropic. Our liqueurs contain less than 0.1% THC, the French legal threshold. You will feel the alcohol (21 to 37% depending on the reference), not the THC.

Can I drive after drinking it?

Alcohol driving laws apply (0.5 g/L blood in France). CBD being non-psychotropic does not affect fitness to drive, but the alcohol in the spirit does.

Does CBD have effects?

Some studies suggest relaxing and anti-inflammatory effects, but the doses in a liqueur (a few mg per glass) are far below the therapeutic doses studied. We claim no medical effect.

Why at 3°C?

Cold rounds out the hemp, shortens its aromatic length, and puts the companion plant (mint, verbena or wormwood) forward. At room temperature, CBD stretches and dominates more.

Storage?

Like any liqueur: away from light, tight cap. No time limit — alcohol preserves perfectly. Once opened, ideally consume within 12 months to keep the aromatic freshness.

A simple philosophy

Our Lumière Obscure range is not here to surf a trend. It’s here because hemp is a plant — fascinating, like mint, verbena or wormwood — and we wanted to treat it as we treat all the plants we bottle: with patience and with respect.

“Ad augusta per angusta” — to the heights, through narrow paths. The motto of this range is a tribute to demanding curiosity.
